There are literally hundreds on top of hundreds of web hosting companies scouring the internet.  A simple google search will show you just how competitive this field has become.  With great competition comes better prices, as we have seen web hosting packages reduce greatly in prices throughout the years.  But with great competition also comes an influx of fly by night hosting companies that offer little or no service.

How long has the company been around?

How reliable is their customer service?

Let’s face it! You’re eventually going to run into some kind of problem with your site.  It happens to everybody.  It may not even be the fault of the hosting company.  It might be that you loaded something onto your website that caused it to crash and you need to be able restore it.    That’s when you have to call the host’s customer service line.

Reliable customer service is absolutely critical if you want to be a successful webmaster.  You need to know that you can rely on them to help you with your problem, because eventually you are going to have some.

You want to make sure that they offer 24/7 customer support.  This is a MUST.  After all your websites are up 24/7, so should customer service. If you don’t see some kind of 24 hour customer support on the sales page, don’t even bother signing up.

Another important aspect is how professional the representatives at the call center are.  It’s important to have people that treat you like your call and the problem you are having is actually important.  If you’re calling in constantly and dealing with rude or aloof service reps, then you have some idea of how bad that company might be.  Especially if they can’t even train their employees correctly.  This doesn’t exactly scream “professional web hosting”.

What kind of uptime do they have?

Almost all professional web hosting companies offer 99.9% uptime.  It’s rather obvious that you need your website available and accessible 24 hours a day.  Otherwise, what’s the point of having one?

Most hosts offer 99.9% uptime but you still want to be able to see it on their sales page.
